Long-Term Disability Claims: Trends in U.S. LTD Claims in Recent Yrs (Pt. 2)

On Behalf of | May 28, 2014 | Long-Term Disability

Picking up where we left off in Long-Term Disability Claims: Trends in U.S. LTD Claims in Recent Yrs (Pt. 1), here we will continue to look at some of the trends that the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) has identified with long-term disability claims filed in the U.S.

In addition to the facts that LTD claimspayments and the number of people covered by LTD insurance have increased since 2008 (as discussed in the first part of this blog), other trends in these claims that have been noted by CDA researchers are as follows:

  • Since 2008, there has been a nearly 10 percent drop in the number of employers offering LTD insurance coverage – The number of U.S. employers who offer long-term disability coverage as part of their benefits packages has reported decreased over the past six years, the CDA has found. While researchers are still looking into why there has been such a significant drop in long-term disability insurance coverage for employees, some have speculated that the economic downturn of 2008 may have played a critical role in motivating employers to cut back on this essential insurance coverage.CDA researchers also pointed out, however, that from 2011 and 2012, the number of employers with LTD coverage remained relatively steady, which may be a result of a slowly improving economy – and which is good news for the American workforce.
  • Despite this drop, economic improvements seem to be decreasing the overall number of LTD claims filed in recent years – As CDA researchers found, only about 27 percent of U.S. employers reported an increase in long-term disability claims filed last year. In comparison, about 43 percent of U.S. employers reported increases in LTD claims in 2011, and nearly 60 percent reported increases in these claims in 2010. Many employers surveyed have attributed the falling number of long-term disability claims filed to be a hallmark of the overall improvement of the U.S. economy.
