Pedestrian accidents often result in very serious injuries or death. When you are walking on or near a roadway, there is very little protection to keep you safe from the vehicles zooming down the roadway. While motorists should watch out for you and follow all laws about giving you the right of way, sometimes they are not paying attention or they disregard laws. Since you will be the one who ends up with severe injuries, it is a good idea to practice safe pedestrian habits to help prevent accidents.
The U.S. Department of Transportation explains one of the most important things you can do as a pedestrian to stay safe is to be alert and aware every time you are near the road. You should avoid doing anything that could take your focus off what is happening around you, such as talking on the phone or listening to music.
Do not take risks
You also need to make sure that you follow all signs and guidelines. Stay in crosswalks and obey traffic signals. You want to be predictable. A vehicle cannot react fast enough if you dart into the roadway or suddenly veer off the sidewalk.
Increase your visibility
Regardless of whether you walk on the sidewalk or on the road, you need to make sure you are visible. Wear bright clothing and carry a light if you are walking at night. Do not conceal yourself in any way or wear clothing that will not stand out in your surroundings.
Be prepared
Drivers are sometimes unpredictable. Make sure you pay attention to any vehicle close to you or approaching you so you can react should they do something that puts you at risk. Also, pay attention when crossing driveways or parking lot entrances for cars coming in and out.
