Long-Term Disability Claims: Trends in U.S. LTD Claims in Recent Yrs (Pt. 1)

On Behalf of | May 15, 2014 | Long-Term Disability

As part of its effort to inform the public about the issues associated with long-term injury and illness, the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) has issued a report on some of the important trends emerging in long-term disability claims within recent years.

The CDA, a nonprofit organization, “engages in research, communications and educational activities that provide information and helpful resources to wage earners, employers, financial advisors, consultants and others who are concerned about the personal and financial impact a disability can have on wage earners and their families,” according to its website.

By taking the time to note the trends in LTD claims that have been emerging in recent years, it may be possible to identify some of the factors causing these changes and, ultimately, take action to try to better protect employees in the future.

A Look at the Emerging Trends in LTD Claims

Among the specific trends identified in the CDA’s report are that:

  • LTD claims payments have increased slightly since 2011 – In fact, payments for long-term disability claims have reportedly increased by 0.4 percent since 2011. Although this may seem like a small increase when it comes to individual claims, in aggregate, the amount paid out for LTD claims throughout the U.S. totaled an estimated $9.4 billion last year.
  • Last year was the first time in the past five years that the number of lives insured by LTD coverage actually increased – In fact, CDA researchers discovered a more than 1 percent increase in the number of U.S. employees who are covered by long-term disability insurance (increasing the number covered to about 32.3 million total American workers).
