Qualifying and Applying for the Colorado PERA Disability Program (Pt. 2)

October 31, 2014

Resuming Qualifying and Applying for the Colorado PERA Disability Program (Pt. 1), here, we will continue our discussion regarding what you need to do in order to obtain benefits via the Colorado PERA Disability Program.

While the first part of this blog series focused on pointing out the specific eligibility requirements for qualifying for the PERA program, below, we will present a basic overview of what to expect when applying for the Colorado PERA Disability Program if you do, indeed, meet all of the necessary requirements.

Applying for the Colorado PERA Disability Program: Here’s What to Expect

When you are ready to officially apply for disability benefits, here’s what you should know:

  • You will need to fully complete a Disability Program Application and then send it to the Colorado PERA Disability Program.
  • While you are encouraged to complete and submit this application as soon as possible after sustaining an injury that prevents you from working, this application must be received by the Colorado PERA Disability Program within 90 days after being terminated from PERA-covered employment.
  • Once PERA has received, reviewed and (hopefully) approved your application, it will send it to Unum (the Colorado PERA Disability Program administrator) for medical review and further processing.
  • From here, you will work directly with Unum to complete the process necessary to obtain benefits.

It’s important to note here that the medical review process with Unum can be involved and complicated and that you may be required to see physicians chosen by Unum to verify the nature and severity of your injuries or impairments.

Because various factors throughout the application process for the Colorado PERA Disability Program can present challenges to injured people obtaining the benefits they deserve, it’s critical that they have an experienced attorney – like the experienced Denver disability insurance lawyers at McDermott Law, LLC – on their side to advocate their rights and help them obtain disability benefits.
