May 12th Is International CFS & Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

May 11, 2015

May 12th serves as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia Awareness Day around the world. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), May 12th has been selected as the date for this Awareness Day because it was the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing and the International Red Cross. It is believed that Florence Nightingale lived with either CFS, which is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), or fibromyalgia.

The goals of CFS and Fibromyalgia Awareness Day are to educate the public about these “invisible illnesses” while providing outreach and support to those who are living with these debilitating conditions.

According to the CDC:

  • About 1 in 50 people in the U.S. – or between 3 million and 6 million Americans – are currently living with fibromyalgia.
  • Following osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia is the second most common condition that affects people’s musculoskeletal systems.
  • Between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women.
  • At least 1 million Americans are living with CFS/ME, but only about 1 in every 5 of these people is ever diagnosed with the condition.
  • The socio-economic costs of CFS/ME have been estimated to be between $18 billion and $51 billion annually in the U.S.
  • The causes of CFS/ME and fibromyalgia are still unknown.

The Impacts of CFS & Fibromyalgia

The tragic reality is that CFS/ME and fibromyalgia can impact people on a physical, psychological and even financial level. While these conditions can cause people to live with chronic pain, fatigue and potentially even cognitive difficulties, they can also result in people becoming depressed due to their limitations and isolation.

What’s more is that the impacts of CFS/ME and fibromyalgia that make it difficult (if not impossible) for people to work can also make it incredibly challenging to pursue disability benefit claims. The good news, however, is that these people can turn to trusted Denver Disability Insurance Attorney Shawn E. McDermott for help.
