    Its symptoms are often generic, meaning that they can be easily (and commonly are) mistaken for symptoms of other conditions (like lupus or hypothyroidism).
  • Its symptoms are different in different people.

What can be just as significant as these issues are the facts that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

  • Between 5 and 10 million people in the U.S. are living with fibromyalgia (with women being 7 times more likely to have this condition than men).
  • After being hospitalized due to fibromyalgia complications, people are 10 times less likely to be able to return to work and are 4 times less likely to be working 1 year after hospitalization.
  • People with fibromyalgia miss, on average, about 17 days of work every year due to their condition.

Fibromyalgia: What You Need to Know

Fact 1 – Fibromyalgia can be a primary or secondary condition. 

Fibromyalgia, which is a condition related to arthritis, can be the main syndrome that affects people or it can be a symptom of some other rheumatic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis. This can make a proper diagnosis of fibromyalgia that much more complicated and challenging, as it may be the case that a diagnosis is reached by a process of elimination (i.e., eliminating the possibility that the muscle pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia are related to other conditions).

When fibromyalgia is a secondary condition, people’s ability to work may be that much more impacted, making it even more important to pursue disability benefits.

Fact 2 – It can take months or even years before fibromyalgia is properly diagnosed.

Given the ambiguous and inconsistent nature of fibromyalgia symptoms, it’s easy for medical professionals to mischaracterize this condition. In fact, the National Fibromyalgia Association reports that, on average, it takes about 5 years for people to be accurately diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
